Updraft – Dancing, falling, flying & letting go

Join Contact Dance Company for a one-day workshop led by Annie Hanauer, an internationally renowned disabled dancer, choreographer, and teacher. The workshop is open to people who are D/deaf, disabled, neurodivergent and non-disabled and have previous dance experience. We would particularly like to reach out to dancers based in Shropshire or the West Midlands who don’t regularly dance with SiD.

Annie’s workshop will explore themes and movement ideas from her new dance solo, Updraft, which looks at the body in relation to landscape and ideas of flying, falling, and letting go. We will explore these themes and ideas on our own and in groups through improvised movement, partner work, touch, drawing and writing.

Annie is passionate about the power, wisdom, and creativity of disabled people, and discovering different ways of moving into full-bodied dancing.

Annie’s work’s A space for all our tomorrows, which looks at utopia through a disability lens, and Updraft, a solo dance with live music exploring the body in relation to landscape, are currently touring Europe.

She has choreographed works for Theatre Münster, Candoco Dance Company, Mobius Dance, Ramped, Zurich University of the Arts, and the University of Minnesota. Annie regularly leads inclusive workshops and professional classes internationally.

The workshop will take place at The Gateway, Chester Street Shrewsbury.

  • The Gateway is an accessible venue. There are a range of facilities including lifts to all floors, wide corridors and electrical opening entrance doors
  • There are 3 Disabled Parking Spaces

The venue is close the train station and town centre car parks. There is some on street parking close to the venue.

SiD’s ‘Dancing Together Apart’ exhibition opens at Shrewsbury Museum

Come along to the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery to view our exhibition,
‘Dancing Together Apart’.
The Exhibition can be viewed in the venue’s beautiful balcony space which is on the 3rd floor and accessible by lift.
This exhibition continues at SMAG until Friday September 30th.

In 2020 Shropshire Inclusive Dance commissioned photographer Ming De Nasty to capture images of Contact Dance Company members dancing at home. Ming’s moving portraits capture dancers participating in zoom classes and performing their own choreographed solos. These stunning images, set in the background of their own home, form a powerful exhibition. The exhibition reveals the dancer’s connection with their homes, their families and their love of dancing.

The four featured dancers are Andrew Kelly, Ellie Taylor, Chloe Shepherd and Mervyn Bradley (pictured above).

The Museum is open from 10am – 4pm and entry is free

What a celebration ! Sid celebrates in style.

Many thanks to all who came to SiD’s 10 year celebration, We had over 70 people attending and were proud to share our performances, films and the exhibition.

The evening really felt like a celebration of SiD with lots of old and new friends in attendance. We witnessed beautiful dancing, listened to great speakers, shared memories, chatted, laughed and applauded together.

Dancers from our classes were thrilled to perform, it was also great to look back at previous work on film and share our new duet ‘Skirting Around the Edges’ which really wowed the audience.

Big thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this happen in particular stage technician Callum Barre, all the SiD team, board members and dancers.
